Description

As part of the Sheffield Innovation Programme, and due to the success of the Brewing Workshop in 2017, Sheffield Hallam University are delivering a Brewery Skills Gap Workshop. The workshop is relevant to Head Brewers and Brewery Technical Staff at micro, small and medium sized breweries based in the Sheffield City Region and will aim to cover the skills gap between the General Certificate in Brewing (GCB) and the MSc in Brewing Science.

The workshop will be delivered in 2 sessions from 10am to 4pm on the 24th September and the 1st of October 2018.

The workshop will cover:
- Basics of microbiology
- Genetics of yeast strains
- Storage and handling of yeast
- Yeast strain selection
- Basics of organic chemistry
- The molecular process and chemistry of brewing
- Brewing analysis
- Laboratory techniques to include microscopy, sterile techniques, plating out, UV-VIS colour and bitter analysis

The anticipated learning outcomes of the workshop are:
- To fill in the basic organic science surrounding brewing
- Understand the microbiology science and techniques
- Knowledge of basic yeast genetics
- Understanding of analytical techniques involved in brewing

Attendees will also be able to bring a sample of their own beer, in order for this to be analysed and results given.
